Hvalsneskirkja was built between 1886-87 and consecrated on Christmas Day of 1887. It was renovated in 1945 under the supervision of Guðjón Samúelsson, famous Icelandic architect. The altarpiece which presents resurrection is a copy of Reykjavik Cathedral altar. Hvalsneskirkja is the first Icelandic church that stands outside a cemetery. One of the greatest treasures of the church is the gravestone of Steinunn Hallgrímsdóttir who died at the age of 4 in 1649. She was a daughter of Hallgrímur Petursson (1614-1674) most renowned Icelandic psalmist who served as a priest in the Hvalsnes parish. The gravestone was found in 1964 in the sidewalk in front of the church.
